Keeping Your House Free of Frozen and Burst Pipes

It’s that time of year again! Wintery weather has greeted us with wide, freezing arms. As temperatures plummet, the risk of pipes freezing and bursting increases. In your home, the most vulnerable areas are basements and attics since they are typically not heated.

There are some very simple things you can do to help reduce your risks, keep the water running and keep your home dry. Keep in mind: the more you do up front, the less of a headache you’ll have later.

  • Add insulation to your pipes. For as little as 50 cents per linear foot, you will have peace of mind knowing your pipes are staying warm.
  • Set your thermostat to the same temperature for both night and day. Saving a few dollars by setting your thermostat back at night has the potential to cost you much more during a cold snap than the few dollars you tried to save.
  • Let your cold-water trickle through your faucets. Even those drips can help prevent freezing pipes

Just like us, our homes can’t escape these cold winter months. Spending a little time and money has the potential to save you thousands in unwanted and unplanned cold weather emergencies.
